Comedian Harmonists on Barisax

It started as an experiment: What would the original arrangements of the famous Comedian Harmonists sound like when played by 5 baritone saxophones (and piano)? Thus, I transposed and adapted the parts for baritone sax and recorded all on a multi tracker. I think, it worked!

Mein kleiner grĂ¼ner Kaktus (My little green cactus)

Here the arrangement. and here the recording.

Veronika, der Lenz ist da (Veronika, spring is here)

Here the arrangement. and here the recording.

Mein Onkel Bumba (My uncle Bumba)

Here the arrangement. and here the recording.

Beethoven's "Eroica" for sax quartett

has its own page.

Blues in the Closet

"Blues in the Closet" is an arrangement of the famous standard by Oscar Pettiford for saxophone quartett (AATB), which I wrote in the nineties for my former saxophone quartett "Hornithology".

The arrangement may be copied and played for free, but I'd be happy to receive a copy of the recording if you play and record it, OK?

Here's the score and the parts, both as PDF.

Now finally I've got a reference recording (MP3, 4.9 MB). Members of the JazzMn Big Band performed it on November 13th 2004. Players were Brian Grivna-alto, Pete Whitman-alto, Dave Karr-tenor, and John Zimmerman-bari.

Thanks to all of you and especially to Dr. Doug Snapp for including Blues in the Closet in the concert!

Capriccio for Tubax and Piano

This is an arrangement of Giovanni Bottesini's virtuoso Capriccio for double bass for tubax with piano accompaniment. The original is in f# minor, for tubax I transposed it to f minor, which is easier for Eb instruments.

The arrangement may be copied and played for free, but I'd be happy to receive a copy of the recording if you play and record it, OK?

Download the entire score or the tubax part. You can also playback it in your browser.

Dance of the Reed Pipes for 3 Sopranos and Tubax

Taken from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's suite The Nutcracker, this arrangement contrasts 3 soprano saxophones (playing the flutes' parts from the original) with a tubax (playing the rest of the orchestra )

The arrangement may be copied and played for free, but I'd be happy to receive a copy of the recording if you play and record it, OK?

Download the entire score or the parts. You can also playback it in your browser.

Dance of the Reed Pipes for sax quartet (satb)

In fact the same as above, but a more conventional instrumentation. It's missing some of the contrast of the former arrangement but at least can be played without having to buy a tubax.

The arrangement may be copied and played for free, but I'd be happy to receive a copy of the recording if you play and record it, OK?

Download the entire score or the parts. You can also playback it in your browser.

My sax quartet made a recording of this piece. Please note that this was a life recording, so please excuse any mistakes, bad intonation, etc.
